The 4th of July, or Independence Day, commemorates the signing of the Declaration of Independence, which declared the separation of the 13 colonies from Great Britain back in 1776.
The first annual commemoration of Independence Day was in Philadelphia on July 4, 1777, even though the war had yet to be won. Festivities included reading the Declaration of Independence, music, fireworks, and the firing of cannons and muskets. In 1781, George Washington gave his soldiers double rations of rum to celebrate the day.
Early on the celebrations of the 4th were quite political. Each political party had its celebration; this was one way for people to learn about the day's issues. In 1870, the U.S. Congress declared July 4th a federal holiday. However, it didn't become a paid holiday for federal employees until 1941.
Today, the 4th of July is often seen as a time for family and neighborhood barbecues, fireworks, relaxation, and remembrance of our country's humble beginnings.
