What is Mid-Autumn Festival?

Mid-Autumn Festival historical background

The Mid-Autumn Festival or Moon Festival is an ancient Chinese Festival that has been celebrated during the autumn full moon since the Shang dynasty (c. 1600 - 1046 BCE).

It is celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th month of the Chinese lunisolar calendar with a full moon at night, which corresponds to mid-September to early October of the Gregorian calendar, and the Harvest Moon (which is one of the biggest and brightest full moons of the year).

It is also a time when offerings are given to Chang-e, the Moon Goddess of Immortality, with a focus on the spirit of thanksgiving and gratitude.

Mid-Autumn Festival cultural significance

It is a time to give thanks for a bountiful harvest both physically and metaphorically. It is a time for families to reunite and celebrate the moon in all her glory through feasting on mooncakes and pomelos, and moon gazing. It is a time to seek help through prayer for gaining prosperity and longevity, by releasing lanterns with prayers on them.

How to celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival at work

Gather your team to celebrate the fruit of their labor. Have your team reflect on all that they have achieved this year.  What is their harvest? From small wins, getting everyone to agree on a meeting date, to landing the big account.

Have a mooncake tasting event. Bring a variety of traditional and non-traditional cakes for people to taste and have them share their thoughts on the different cakes. Do the cakes remind you of traditions from your past?

Have a lantern making contest. Set up a space where people can go and create lanterns, encourage them to fill their lanterns with their hopes and wishes for prosperous futures. You can supply construction paper, tissue paper, little LED candles, glue and scissors, ribbons and twine.

Pomelos are an Asian citrus fruit similar to a sweet grapefruit that are associated with good luck and prosperity. Like the orange and the grapefruit when you peel a pomelo you have slices that can be shared with others, as with sharing one’s luck and prosperity with others. Have your team discuss how sharing our gifts, our knowledge, our tricks of the trade can help the whole team advance and work more smoothly together.

Take a team outing: Attend a Mid-Autumn Festival together, or go moon gazing in a park.
