Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. It marks the anniversary of June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, TX, and announced the end of slavery.
The news of freedom reached enslaved people in Texas over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. Even then, slavery was over only on paper, with the Voting Rights Act enforcing the right to vote for African Americans only in 1965—a century later.
The story of the lived experiences of the African American community continues to this day. Whether we identify as members of this community, allies, or neighbors, we all have a role to play so that it doesn't take another century for everyone to enjoy equal rights, freedoms and opportunities.
